Overview
The OT Scrub Nurse is responsible for ensuring that surgical procedures are performed safely and efficiently by maintaining sterile techniques, preparing surgical instruments, and assisting the surgical team throughout operations.
Responsibilities
- Prepare the operating theatre before surgery.
- Sterilize and arrange surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Ensure all surgical instruments and materials are available before the procedure.
- Maintain a sterile field throughout the surgery.
- Pass instruments, sutures, sponges, and other supplies to the surgeon and assistants.
- Perform surgical counts (instruments, needles, and sponges) before, during, and after surgery.
- Assist in positioning and preparing patients for surgery.
- Monitor aseptic technique and help prevent surgical site infections.
- Handle specimens correctly for laboratory examination.
- Document intraoperative nursing care accurately.
- Clean and prepare the operating room for subsequent procedures.
- Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate maintenance.
- Support emergency and trauma surgeries when required.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, circulating nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
Skills
Required Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Nursing (GNM/B.Sc. Nursing).
- Registered Nurse (RN) with the relevant nursing council.
- Specialized training or experience in Operation Theatre Nursing (preferred).
- Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is an advantage.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of sterile and aseptic techniques.
- Excellent understanding of surgical instruments and procedures.
- Ability to anticipate the surgeon's needs.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Knowledge of infection prevention and patient safety standards.
Experience
- 2–5 years of OT experience is preferred for staff nurse positions.
- Experience in specialties such as general surgery, orthopedics, obstetrics & gynecology is an advantage.
